Nathan Lyon returned best every figures by an Australia cricket team bowler against India national cricket team, while KL Rahul’s gritty 90 was the only high point for the hosts on a demanding M Chinnaswamy Stadium pitch on Day 1 of the second Test.

Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon captured a record eight for 50 to again expose Indian batsmen’s frailties on a turning pitch, dismissing the hosts for 189 on Day 1 of the second Test at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday..
Nathan Lyon returned best figures by an Australian bowler against India as he took over the role of chief wrecker from left-arm spinner, Steve O’Keefe, who took a record 12/70 to send India hurtling to a 333-run defeat in the first Test in Pune inside three days.
Indian batsmen, shot out for 105 and 107 in Pune, their lowest combined total in a home Test, were a bundle of nerves on another dry pitch with cracks and some variable pace, though it was nothing close to the rank turner of the first game.
Opener KL Rahul made a gritty 90, his second fifty in the series, but threw his wicket away, holing Lyon to mid on to become the seventh victim of the spinner, and ninth of the innings. He hit nine fours in his 205-ball, but looked in some discomfort due to a dodgy shoulder.
Aussie pace spearhead Mitchell Starc stuck first like he did in the opening Test, dismissing stand-in opener Abhinav Mukund for a duck before Lyon took over.
Using some variable bounce at the far end, and brilliantly pulling back deliveries as Indian batsmen lunging forward uncertainly, the 29-year-old struck at the stroke of lunch to dismiss Cheteshwar Pujara for 17, caught at forward short leg.
He dominated the post-lunch session in a spell of 16-3-40-3, trapping skipper Virat Kohli leg before for 12 and then having Ajinkya Rahane stumped for 17. R Ashwin, Wriddhiman Saha and Ravindra Jadeja too fell to tentative approach against spin.
Lyon removed Jadeja and last man Ishant Sharma off successive deliveries to be on a hattrick.
Lyon’s personal best in an innings was against India, his 7/94 at Delhi on the 2013 tour. He surpassed off-spinner Jason Krejza’s 8/215 taken in Nagpur in 2008.
